The Wildebeests and Zebras Breeding season
Category: Wildebeest | Date: Feb 19 2008 | By: admin
Hello,
Dear Readers and Partners,
Please kindly, can you share with me this information on the wildlife called Wildebeest?
The Wildebeests and Zebras normally have, the similar breeding and Gestation periods of about 287-294 days(9-10 months). Their breeding season start from late January to early April every year.
The Conservancy then moved to address key Wildlife dispersal areas around protected areas. The Tarangire -Manyara ecosystem including Ol Tukai plains, is one such area. This area is critical to the long term survival for Tarangire- manyara ecosystem because it facilitates Wet season dispersal and breeding season for Wildlife, especially wildebeests and Zebras. This area is not severely threatened by Land conversion to Large scale Agriculture. The Conservancy is working with Wildlife Division(govt Authorities), and Communities on the process of zoning and management planning in the area in order to protect it for use by Livestock and Wildlife for dispersal.
We have reports from the game scouts of many wildebeest giving birth as I write on the lake shore.
With completion of the plan, the dispersal area stands a higher chance of being conserved for Wildlife and Livestock use.
Thank you for your attention,
Boniface Ngimojino.

Hello, Readers, and interested partners,
I would like to share with you the following information, this that, The Conservancy is dedicated to understanding and resolving conflicts that, occur between Large Mammals/Predators, particularly Lions, and Human Communities utilizing the Tarangire- Manyara Ecosystem in Northern Tanzania.
The Tarangire-Manyara Ecosystem is renowned for its high concentration of Wildlife Species, Including Elephants, Buffaloes, Wildebeests, Zebras,Giraffes, Enlands, Impala, Thompson Gazelles, Grants Gazelles, Lesser kudu, Dik diks, Warthogs, Rabbits, Baboons, Monkeys, and Ostriches, which sustain Predators such as Lions, Leopards, Hyenas, Cheetahs, and Wild dogs.
However, the area is experiencing intense land pressure, and Conservationists fear that populations are declining. The Conservancy evaluates the abundance of large Predators in the Tarangire- Manyara Ecosystem as well as compares the diverse interactions between several Human Communities (Pastoralists and Tourists) and Lions that affect the Survival of Lions and the Livelihoods of Local people.
LIVESTOCK- PREDATORS CONFLICT;
Monitors incidences of Livestock predation and develops altenative strategies for reducing conflicts.
This Conservation programme requires significant logistical and Financial support so as to maintain Local Anti-poaching Teams, in facilitating preventing illegal hunting and normal Routine of patrolling.
Thanking you in advance.

The Livestock sector contribute 18% of the National Gross Domestic Product:
Category: Uncategorized | Date: Feb 07 2008 | By: admin
The current Research done in the Regions of Tanzania, focusing on the Livestock trade systems from the producers through primary and second day market and at the slaughtering houses. The study shows that, the Livestock sector contribute 18% of Tanzania Gross Domestic Point(GDP) and 30% of the Agricultural GDP out of these 40% comes from Beef production, 30% from milk and another 30% from poultry and small stock production(the research was done under TAPHGO-Tanzania Pastoralists Hunters and Gathers Organization).
Despite of its significant contribution to the DGP, Pastoralism as Livestock Production system is either not well understood or Wrongly perceived by many livestock development stakeholders including Scientists and policy Makers.
The Traditional Livestock breeds are commonly considered unproductive meaning that such animal have low levels of Outputs. In this productivity implies some relationships between inputs and outputs whereas production is merely an outputs functions. The great advantages of the Traditional Livestock breeds as their adoption to the stressful local nutritional, Health and management environment and their ability to produce any output at all. The Pastoralism has got bad name for Dertification though not faults of its own and this has seriously undermined the regulation of a basic good management system in the mind many decision makers. Pastoralism has progressively been flattened attributed by the belief that the marginal areas(Rangelands) could contribute more the country under different production systems, as extensive Pastoralist systems are unproductive.
The study has proved significantly that pastoralism contributes a lot to the Livestock markets in Tanzania as well as National economy. For instance between 1992-2000 out of the total stocks in the primary markets, 39% were Shinyanga Region, 25% from Arusha, 19% from mwanza and 18% from Dodoma. Just to mention a few.
The level of Taxes and benefits from the Livestock trade Industry, I e, the case study of Arusha meat company indicates that pastoralists and Agro-pastoralists support large group of people and business. The policies related to Livestock trade systems should support these groups with clear activities geared improving productivity and building market structures to improve efficiency.
Tanzania has tremendous potential for meat processing Industry with adequate stocks supplies to sustain Market. protection of pastoralism equates protection of wildlife in Tanzania. There is a great interaction with Wildlife and the Domesticated Animals. They can graze together since some of them are Browsers like antelopes and goats.
According the lifestyle and maasai mode of grazing Livestock, they can balance the wildlife and livestock.
Thank you very much for your cooperation.

The pastoralists need to benefit more from wildlife
Category: Uncategorized | Date: Feb 05 2008 | By: admin
The pastoralists who reside along Tarangire-manyara wildlife corridor and the National parks have urgued the Govt to improve the draft of the wildlife Act of 2004, so as to benefit before it is tabled in parliament session in Dodoma.
The draft also does not state clearly how the local communities will benefit from the Resources in the parks and Game Reserves areas, bearing in Mind that, pastoralists are the Tradtional Conservationists of wildlife Resources. The Wildlife policy in Tanzania has marginalized the pastoral communities around the Conservation, Parks, Wild management Areas(WMA) and Game Reserves areas, however they are the Ones who have always ensured sustainability of Wildlife in the ares which are now being exploited by the Govt.
The wildlife conservation Act is loaded with “DONTS” by communities and other Land Users when it comes to dealing with
We can meet our Needs through unity

Hello,
Readers, Partners and Interested Parties.
The Ol Tukai Conservancy is Working with approximately 2000 Maasai Pastorolists at Ol Tukai Village in Monduli district to Improve and provide Resources for Tarangire-Manyara Eco system, including Vital Corridor, Wildlife, environmental and soil conservation.
Improve their Food security through activities in water supply,Agricultural Diversification and Animal Health. Education and Economic Empowerment of Maasai(Income generating skills) is another focus area.
The Conservation partners are Matembezi company, Tanzanian Govt Game Division, AWF/TLCT Manyara Ranch and Kamite Foundation.
WE CAN MEET OUR NEEDS THROUGH UNITY.
It all started with small -scale saving with conservancy encouragement, we all started earning some money per month( said by women). It is not much, but it was not long before we had over one thousand US dollars deposited in own bank account. About 8 women groups( with 120 members) in Ol Tukai Village.
The conservancy gave us a matching grant of the said amount, plus skills Training for managerial/businesses skills, We have started. We got a loan of the reasonable money from the Conservancy to start goats and cattle raising, and from the profits so far, we have been able to improve our houses and sent children to schools.
But our saving and business groups are not just about making more money, we like meeting together to discuss the latest news and share each others problems.
The latest news is that, our groups have been officially recognized(in the process to be registered by the Govt district), so we can access training and inputs from conservancy in the future. But the conservancy wants us to live in a Dignity and increase our self-realince. So they have created a lot of opportunity for us, to grow food on our houese farms, keep Dairy animals and learn skills for earning income.
BASIC NEEDS FIRST THE HELP TO HELP OURSELVES.
We Ol Tukai Community appreciate the fair and transparent system that the Conservancy has set up for maintains Clean water supply, and contribution of money in building the village dispensary, to save peoples”life during a difficult delivery in the middle of the night.
In the past, so many of our sisters have lost their babies or their own Lives during childbirth, many from infections due to lack or contaminated instruments. This will reduce the danger to women in our community.
Even in Ol Tukai, there is no health centre neither hospital, and there are only a few Rudimentary Dispensaries in small markets or in Trading centres, many km out of Ol Tukai.
The Maasai steppe is Vast and Sparsely settled. This on going work(construction) still need external support.
