Hello,
Readers, Partners and Interested Parties.
The Ol Tukai Conservancy is Working with approximately 2000 Maasai Pastorolists at Ol Tukai Village in Monduli district to Improve and provide Resources for Tarangire-Manyara Eco system, including Vital Corridor, Wildlife, environmental and soil conservation.
Improve their Food security through activities in water supply,Agricultural Diversification and Animal Health. Education and Economic Empowerment of Maasai(Income generating skills) is another focus area.
The Conservation partners are Matembezi company, Tanzanian Govt Game Division, AWF/TLCT Manyara Ranch and Kamite Foundation.
WE CAN MEET OUR NEEDS THROUGH UNITY.
It all started with small -scale saving with conservancy encouragement, we all started earning some money per month( said by women). It is not much, but it was not long before we had over one thousand US dollars deposited in own bank account. About 8 women groups( with 120 members) in Ol Tukai Village.
The conservancy gave us a matching grant of the said amount, plus skills Training for managerial/businesses skills, We have started. We got a loan of the reasonable money from the Conservancy to start goats and cattle raising, and from the profits so far, we have been able to improve our houses and sent children to schools.
But our saving and business groups are not just about making more money, we like meeting together to discuss the latest news and share each others problems.
The latest news is that, our groups have been officially recognized(in the process to be registered by the Govt district), so we can access training and inputs from conservancy in the future. But the conservancy wants us to live in a Dignity and increase our self-realince. So they have created a lot of opportunity for us, to grow food on our houese farms, keep Dairy animals and learn skills for earning income.
BASIC NEEDS FIRST THE HELP TO HELP OURSELVES.
We Ol Tukai Community appreciate the fair and transparent system that the Conservancy has set up for maintains Clean water supply, and contribution of money in building the village dispensary, to save peoples”life during a difficult delivery in the middle of the night.
In the past, so many of our sisters have lost their babies or their own Lives during childbirth, many from infections due to lack or contaminated instruments. This will reduce the danger to women in our community.
Even in Ol Tukai, there is no health centre neither hospital, and there are only a few Rudimentary Dispensaries in small markets or in Trading centres, many km out of Ol Tukai.
The Maasai steppe is Vast and Sparsely settled. This on going work(construction) still need external support.

Great team work, it is always a lot easier when problems are shared with others. This leads to productivity and a feeling of community. I worry for these women who risk their lives during childbirth. It is my hope that the needed medical attention they deserve is someday soon provided. I also wish these women realized their full potential, besides rearing families. A women’s worth should not be measured in how many children she chooses to have. It is far better to have one healthy child, then many sick and hungry children!
