The pastoralists need to benefit more from wildlife

Category: Uncategorized | Date: Feb 05 2008 | By: admin

The pastoralists who reside along Tarangire-manyara wildlife corridor and the National parks have urgued the Govt to improve the draft of the wildlife Act of 2004, so as to benefit before it is tabled in parliament session in Dodoma.
The draft also does not state clearly how the local communities will benefit from the Resources in the parks and Game Reserves areas, bearing in Mind that, pastoralists are the Tradtional Conservationists of wildlife Resources. The Wildlife policy in Tanzania has marginalized the pastoral communities around the Conservation, Parks, Wild management Areas(WMA) and Game Reserves areas, however they are the Ones who have always ensured sustainability of Wildlife in the ares which are now being exploited by the Govt.

Hello Bonaface, Thank you for replying on my previous comments. You will be relieved to know That I’m making a donation now for the health needs of the women there (medicine, supplies, etc.) Now, on this post you stress the point that the pastoralists don’t benefit from the presence of wildlife. This seems to be a big problem in Kenya as well. I assume it is because the central or local goverment is not sharing the revenues earned from tourism, is that correct?

Hey Theresa,
I am really happy and satisfied with your correspondences on the updates.
You are very correct on the issue of pastoralist benefit on wildlife Earnings.
The reasons among others, including Lack of pastoralist participation, Lack of clear policies/ regulations, the incomes should be submitted to HQ, then 10-25% to be taken to the local Govt including villagers. Also not only the mentioned reasons, but there are lot of obstacles from the Lower levels. The supervision, set up of priorities and technical know how are total ignored.

Hey Boniface, very frustrating for you to have your needs ignored, especially when they are based on facts, figures, and policies in place.

Dear Theresa,
Thank you for your reply. The conservancy is putting a lot of emphasis on building capacity, Development of Action plans(basing on priorities), facilitating debates, study tours, intensive and regularly meetings and awareness raising to communities so as to eliminate/reduce this kind of ignorance.
Thank you again, Boniface ngimojino.
