The village is one of the villages existing close to Tarangire and Manyara national parks, on the western part of Arusha municipality. Ol Tukai name is derived from the native tree called Ol Tukai. Pastoralism is a main economic activity of the people who depend on Livestock keeping for both household food supply and generating cash income to meet their basic needs.
Good leadership has played a great role in changing the environment and livelihoods of Ol Tukai villagers. Due to good leadership, modern houses increased in number. The community members are now participating in various activities and conservation initiatives. The modern houses include school teacher houses, village Govt office and water dam. This project costed about Tshs. 1, 219, 000, 000/-. Out of this money, The Conservancy, Govt/ADB, Commnity, kamite foundation and other patners participated in contributing the money.
The inaguration of this project was done by The Tanzania former Prime Minister-Edward Lowassa on 28th, aug, 2008, where hundreds of local people attended. Eleven goats and one bull were slaughtered in the inguration ceremony. With these capacity building programmes, people started to be awaire of their surrounding and developed a positive attitude towards conservation. Their perceptions and behaviours changed too.The wildlife awareness is now a priority to the community.

The Tarangire and Manyara national parks/ecosystem is home to the largest mammals
Category: Uncategorized | Date: Aug 27 2008 | By: oltukaiconservancy
Any visitor, be local or foreign, wishing to watch large herds of Elephants. The best place to go is the Tarangire- Manyara ecosystem in Arusha and Manyara regions. There is a lot of concentration of the largest mammals on land whose density per square km is the highest than anywhere in the world. Many people are excited when they hear or watch movies or stories on the elephant. The excitement of these people about this animal centres on its large body, the way it feeds itself, the animal’s tusks, to name but a few aspects. The Tarangire- Manyara parks, one of the 14 national parks in Tanzania, boasts of having large herds of elephants compared to other parks in the country. The Conservancy is putting a lot of emphasis on taking care of these wild mammals.
In some cases in the parks (s), one herd can have up to 300 elephants. Amazing!. These large herds of elephants include a whole clan from very old elephants to youngers who tag behind their mothers but when they sense danger, they quickly rush between legs of elders for protection. Lactating elephantns are very aggressive especially when their youngers lives are threatened.

Category: Uncategorized | Date: Aug 18 2008 | By: oltukaiconservancy
The maasai are devided into two major clans, knowns as “Orok kiteng(Black steer)” and “Odomong’i(Red steer)”. The clans internally, divided into sub- clans, each named after the original founder. The orok kiteng’ clan is devided into six sub clans, while the Odomong’i is devided into four sub-clans.
These clans are not localized, but are spread out all over the territory, as a result of Maasai pattern of residence. The marriege- polygamy is accepted, but in maasai society, there are many men who have more than one wives but for the young generation, are mostly have one wife. Generally, marriege are arranged by fathers and mothers rather the couple themselves, considering the clan factor/origin(should not belong to the same clan). The wedding involves a huge feast which the bridegroom’s family gives a Dowry, which include -cattle, sheep, goats and honey to the bride’s father, which will be returned to the Groom if there is divorce.
Thank you for your interest on this maasai culture.

The change of climatical condition

Due to a lot of rainfall that received in early 2008(Not less than an average of 700mm per annum), along the Tarangire - Manyara ecosystem, had supported the growth of pastures of many kinds. The perennial grasses, Herbs, Shrubs and large trees are among of the Natural vegetations which make the wildlife to remain constantly in the area( Ol Tukai) throughout the year.
Plenty of water nearby/ door to door, and security for wildlife to mention but few, became the factors noted to affect the presence of many species of Fauna and Flora. The soil type( clay, loam, sandy and black cotton), is proved to be fertile which enhances the growth of health of the ecosystem and habitats.
