The maasai mode of life consist of two major clans
Category: Uncategorized | Date: Aug 18 2008 | By: oltukaiconservancy
The maasai are devided into two major clans, knowns as “Orok kiteng(Black steer)” and “Odomong’i(Red steer)”. The clans internally, divided into sub- clans, each named after the original founder. The orok kiteng’ clan is devided into six sub clans, while the Odomong’i is devided into four sub-clans.
These clans are not localized, but are spread out all over the territory, as a result of Maasai pattern of residence. The marriege- polygamy is accepted, but in maasai society, there are many men who have more than one wives but for the young generation, are mostly have one wife. Generally, marriege are arranged by fathers and mothers rather the couple themselves, considering the clan factor/origin(should not belong to the same clan). The wedding involves a huge feast which the bridegroom’s family gives a Dowry, which include -cattle, sheep, goats and honey to the bride’s father, which will be returned to the Groom if there is divorce.
Thank you for your interest on this maasai culture.
