The village is one of the villages existing close to Tarangire and Manyara national parks, on the western part of Arusha municipality. Ol Tukai name is derived from the native tree called Ol Tukai. Pastoralism is a main economic activity of the people who depend on Livestock keeping for both household food supply and generating cash income to meet their basic needs.
Good leadership has played a great role in changing the environment and livelihoods of Ol Tukai villagers. Due to good leadership, modern houses increased in number. The community members are now participating in various activities and conservation initiatives. The modern houses include school teacher houses, village Govt office and water dam. This project costed about Tshs. 1, 219, 000, 000/-. Out of this money, The Conservancy, Govt/ADB, Commnity, kamite foundation and other patners participated in contributing the money.
The inaguration of this project was done by The Tanzania former Prime Minister-Edward Lowassa on 28th, aug, 2008, where hundreds of local people attended. Eleven goats and one bull were slaughtered in the inguration ceremony. With these capacity building programmes, people started to be awaire of their surrounding and developed a positive attitude towards conservation. Their perceptions and behaviours changed too.The wildlife awareness is now a priority to the community.
Thanking you for your co operation.
